WEIU-TV is a full service television station in Charleston, Illinois broadcasting on local digital UHF channel 5. It is a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member public television station in . Its headquarters are at Eastern Illinois University, which is the origin of the call sign’s letters. WEIU also airs EIU sporting events, such as football and basketball. WEIU-TV began broadcasting in 1986 offering local news, public affairs, and instructional programming. . Its local programming included a student-run news program called News Scan, producing two daily newscast. Some other first local programs that aired on WEIU included “Time Out for Trivia”, “EIU Connection”, and “Coach’s Corner”. In 1992, WEIU joined PBS airing 10 hours of PBS children’s programming weekly. . In January 2002, the news program changed its name from News Scan to News Watch. WEIU News Watch won its first EMMY in 2009 and its second EMMY in 2010. Sports programming has also been a strong part of the history of WEIU with shows like “Panther Country” (now “Sports Talk”). The first episode of “Panther Country” aired in August of 1987 with host David Kidwell. WEIU has also tried when ever possible to air live as many EIU sporting events as possible. WEIU operates a non-commercial WEIU-FM 88.9 (“Hit Mix 88.9”), and a college radio internet radio station.
